Nasi Kuning (Indonesian Turmeric Rice)

Typically served as special dish during traditional celebration, Nasi Kuning or Turmeric Rice is an original delicacy from Indonesia. It appears in a vibrant yellow color with rich taste and an array of tempting side dishes. You can find Nasi Kuning is usually stuffed into a cone-shaped mould, which called tumpeng, to mark a certain milestone such as wedding, birthday, and inaugurations.

Serving: 4


  • 2 cups long grain white rice
  • cup water
  • 100 ml coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 3 fresh screwpine (pandan) leave, knotted together
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 kaffir lime leaves, torn
  • 1 lemongrass, bruised and chopped
  • Salt for seasoning

Side dishes (get everything ready to serve)

  • Potato fritters
  • Javanese fried chicken
  • Thin rolled omelette
  • Sliced tomato
  • Crackers
  • Fried shallots
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Lettuce


  1. Put all the ingredients into the rice cooked, mix well.
  2. Once the cooker turns into “warm” mode (indicating that the rice is ready), open the lid. Remove the lemongrass, bay leaf, and kaffir lime leaves.
  3. Close the lid again and let sit for 10 minutes for it to be fully cooked.


  1. Scoop the rice on the plate. Tip: Use a semi-circle mold for a pretty appearance.
  2. Surrounding the rice, arrange all the side dishes and sprinkle with fried shallots.


  • 1 cups (US) = 236.5 gram.
  • If you want to have a more vibrant yellow color, use a real turmeric and grind it instead of using instant powder.
  • You can cook it on a stove, but add another ½ cup of water when doing so.
  • You can also cook it in an instant pot with the same exact method.
