The authentic Indonesian fragrant coconut rice itself had existed between the 14th and 16th centuries and was brought firstly to Indonesia via trading routes by Malay traders. They migrated from Sumatra to Java. About the name itself, nasi uduk is derived from the Sundanese language, in which the word “uduk” means “solid” or “mixed”.
There are also those who say that the word “uduk” has the same meaning as “tough”, by and large in the earlier times when nasi uduk can only be bought at the market or from mobile vendors who were selling off nasi uduk by using a cart. Even at that time there had been many Indonesian women who cooked nasi uduk for sale in the market to earn a living. This is mainly because cooking nasi uduk itself is quite easy – it’s so hassle-free that you can easily make it by yourself at home!
